Redoak's Rauch Bier won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup 2006 for the smoke-flavoured beer category. It won up against many well-known beers, including German beers which is where the beer style originated. Only 6 Australian beers have ever won a gold medal at a World Beer Cup and this is one of them!
Rauch Bier, a German smoked lager, is the first of its kind to be brewed in Australia. Rauch Bier originated in Bamberg, Germany over 300 years ago. A rich copper coloured lager with a dense caramel head and a sweet, smoked malt aroma & flavour. This beer is a unique balance of sweet toasty malt with smoked accents and a warming finish. It is made of the finest Munich malts, Beechwood smoked malt, Redoak smoked malt & subtle hopping. This is a largely forgotten beer style since 17th century. David first tasted this beer style in 1994 and noted it was subsequently identified in 1997 by Michael Jackson (beer expert) to in fact be a beer style of its own.
